WHAT IS A MARRIAGE LICENSE?
A marriage license is the legal authorization you need before your wedding ceremony. It certifies that you and your partner meet Saskatchewan’s requirements for age, consent, and marital status. Once you, your partner, and your officiant sign the license, it becomes a permanent record filed with the provincial Vital Statistics office.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Before you apply, verify that you and your partner:
- Are at least 18 years old (or between 16–17 with parental consent).
- Are not closely related by blood or adoption.
- Are currently single, divorced (with final decree), or widowed.
WHAT TO BRING WHEN YOU PURCHASE A MARRIAGE LICENSE
- Valid, government-issued photo ID for both parties (driver’s license or passport).
- Any divorce decrees or death certificates if previously married.
- Parental consent forms, if either party is under 18.
LICENSE VALIDITY & TIMING
Your Saskatchewan marriage license is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. If you do not solemnize your marriage within this period, the license will expire and you will be required to reapply and pay the applicable fee again. It is therefore essential to plan your application date in alignment with your wedding schedule to avoid any administrative delays or additional costs.
Saskatchewan does not impose a waiting period once your marriage license has been issued. You and your officiant may perform the ceremony immediately upon leaving our office, provided that all required documentation has been verified and the license has been signed in the presence of the notary public. This streamlined process ensures that you can proceed with your wedding plans without unnecessary delay.
Although we are able to issue marriage licenses on the spot, we recommend securing your license one to two weeks in advance of your wedding date. Allowing for this lead time provides a buffer for any unexpected changes—such as venue restrictions, officiant availability, or last-minute document clarification—and ensures that your license remains valid through the entirety of your planning process.
